Cydnidae, commonly known as burrowing bugs or burrower bugs, are a family of insects belonging to the superfamily Pentatomoidea. With around 750 species, these insects are widely distributed across the globe.
Their Behavior and Habitat
As their common name suggests, burrowing bugs spend most of their lives underground. They typically burrow around clumps of grass in sandy or loose soil. They occasionally venture out of their burrows to feed on roots and other plant matter.
Peanut Burrower Bug: A Notable Species
One notable species within the Cydnidae family is Pangaeus bilineatus, commonly known as the peanut burrower bug. Native to Central America, this insect is a piercing-sucking pest that feeds on peanut plants and can cause significant damage to crops.
